“Piazzolla – Rovira: The Edge of Tango”
During 2021, SONICO will celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the birth of Astor Piazzolla with the release of their upcoming album, “Piazzolla – Rovira: The Edge of Tango”. The album, to be premiered at Klara festival 2021/ BOZAR, will recover music from Piazzolla’s first avant-garde group, the Octeto Buenos Aires.
The Octeto Buenos Aires, formed in 1955 by Astor Piazzolla, is known as the pioneer in the creation of a new genre called “tango nuevo”. Nevertheless, Piazzolla wasn’t the only pioneer. SONICO seeks to show a bigger spectrum of this movement through the compositions of Eduardo Rovira and his Octeto La Plata. “Piazzolla – Rovira: The Edge of Tango” is based on the recovery of Octeto Buenos Aires scores, which were burned by Piazzolla himself in the early ’60s, as well as the scores of the Octeto La Plata, which were partially lost during a flood and haven’t been played since then.
In September 2021, SONICO will present “Piazzolla – Rovira: The Edge of Tango” during a Latin American tour. With the release of their third album, SONICO wishes to bring this key moment, which brought together both avant-garde tango creators more than 60 years ago, back to the present.
