“In Argentina you can change everything except tango”
The Brussels based quintet SONICO celebrates the repertoire of the Argentinian composer Eduardo Rovira. Rovira is thought of as the “other Astor Piazzolla” because of his fundamental role in the creation of the “tango nuevo” during the Buenos Aires avant-garde in the early ’50s.
In April 2015, the Argentinian bass player Ariel Eberstein decided to take part in the Brussels Tango Festival. He was surprised to find his colleague American violinist Stephen Meyer – with whom he had collaborated in countless productions at the national Belgian opera house, De Munt/La Monnaie – at the festival as well. Astor Piazzolla and Eduardo Rovira came up over the course of a conversation with Stephen, followed by an immediate plan to create a group together focused on Rovira’s music. Another participant of the festival was the talented French Chilean bandoneon player Lysandre Donoso, also the leader of the Orquesta Tipica “Silbando”. When Lysandre heard the name Rovira, he was immediately convinced that he’d like to take part as well. SONICO was born!
SONICO completed the 2015-16 season with a sold-out concert at the “Schaerbeek Laat” festival and began the 2016-17 season with a concert in the Galeries Royales Saint- Hubert. More than 1000 guests attended! Also during this season, SONICO was featured on the first episode of the show Culture Club, hosted by Bent van Looy and Sofie Lemaire on the Belgium television network Canvas.
During the 2017-18 season, SONICO took part in several festivals, including “United Music of Brussels” organized by La Monnaie and the National Orchestra of Belgium, as well as the Brussels Jazz Festival in Flagey. SONICO also participated in the inauguration of the exhibition “Een Beetje Belg” at the Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp and performed with Fernando Otero (four-time Grammy award-winner).
In just three years of existence, SONICO has become one of the most interesting contemporary tango ensembles, and thanks to the versatility of Eduardo Rovira’s music, SONICO has participated in important Jazz, Tango, Classical Music and World Music festivals in Latin America and in Europe.
In August 2018, SONICO presented their album “Eduardo Rovira: La Otra Vanguardia” (CD/Vinyl) in Buenos Aires (Argentina) as part of the Tango Festival BA, the world’s most prestigious tango festival. SONICO was the main international guest at the festival, confirming its reputation as one of the most innovative tango ensembles in Europe.
In March 2019, SONICO released their first album at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, as part of the new concert series entitled “100 years of Tango.” From then on, SONICO’s album will be presented in several summer festivals such as Pietrasanta in Concerto (IT), Tarbes Tango Festival (FR), Tango Brutal (NL), Midiminimes (BE), Zomer van Sint-Pieter (BE), a.o.
In December 2018, “Eduardo Rovira: La Otra Vanguardia” has been chosen in the top 10 by Billboard magazine in the category Tango.
Since January 2017, Sonico is supported by the Flemish Community and the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
